“Future medicine will be the medicine of frequencies.” Albert Einstein
“Mmmmmm,” I would venture to say, is a universally welcoming sound of goodness. Do you agree? Just try it as you let go of a sigh, or respond to the dinner menu. Feels good right? But can this pleasant feeling really have an effect on one’s state of being? To answer this question, I’ll start be sharing a bit of what I have learned about sound healing.
What is Sound Healing? Sound healing relies on the understanding that everything is in motion, a state of vibration. Thus, if everything is in vibration this includes our body. Every bone, every organ and tissue is vibrating at a healthy frequency – a resonant frequency, often referred to as “sound health.” But if it begins vibrating at a distorted frequency, playing out of tune or out of ease, we say that this part of the body is “dis-eased.” Sound healing restores the resonant frequency to that part of our body that is vibrating out of ease and harmony and assist you in returning to your original blueprint of health.
Sound healing or the sound current can simply be achieved through your voice. Yes, self-created sound is found to be the most healing instrument. You may simply choose to hum! Scientists studying the effects of humming found the following:
-increased oxygen in the cells
-increased lymphatic circulation
-increased levels of melatonin
-reduced levels of stress-related hormones
-the release of endorphins, self-created opiates that work as “natural pain relievers”
-Boosted production of interleukin-1, a protein associated with blood and planet production
-Increased levels of nitric oxide, (NO), a molecule associated with the pro motion of healing
-The release of oxytocin, the “trust” hormone
You see, our attitudes and emotional vibration effects every cell in our body. It is empowering to find that we can consciously choose health as we align ourselves with higher vibrational frequencies. In the scale outlined below, we are shown energy levels of human consciousness as explained by David R. Hawkins, M.D.., Ph.D. in his book Power vs. Force. It shows that “fear-based” emotions are on the low end and all levels below 200 are destructive of life in the individual and society at large. “Love-based” emotions are on the high end and all levels above 200 are constructive levels of power. (Note: These calibration figures do not represent an arithmetic but a logarithmic progression, i.e., 300 is not twice the amplitude of 150; it is 10 to the 300th power, an enormous increase of power as we move up the scale.)
Enlightenment 700-1,000 (i.e., awareness that you are more than just a physical body)
Peace 600
Joy 540
Love 500
Reason 400
Willingness 310
Neutrality 250
Courage 200 (the fulcrum that divides the general areas of force and power)
Pride 175
Anger 150
Desire 175
Fear 100
Grief 75
Apathy 50
Guilt 30
Shame 20
In my workshops and soundbaths I often introduce a tool known as vocal toning, or “Vowels as Mantras,” wherein we use vowel sounds associated with our energetic centers (chakras) to open the flow of energy in our bodies and activate the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS, “rest-and- digest”). This practice assists in finding health and balance for the participants and they are more receptive to receive the benefits of the following soundbath I offer with crystal bowls, drums and gongs.
SIMPLE TONING PRACTICE: I invite you to take a moment now place your left hand over your heart then your right hand on top of your left. Take a long smooth inhale, then long smooth exhale. Then, vocally sound “AH” (as in “Ma”), repeat 3-7 times. At first you may imagine you are hugging a loved one close or remembering a cherished experience, as you vibrate the “ah” in your chest. Then, sit quietly for a moment and just be present. You may choose to notice what has shifted. Are you aware of a shift in the vibration within yourself? To increase the power of this technique you may want to silently state an intention before this practice, for example “I am loving and lovable”. “Frequency plus intention equals healing.” ~ Jonathan Goldman (sound healing pioneer, teacher and huge proponent of humming for healing)
What I have found is, courage is the pivotal point that can shift us to a higher vibrational state of being. The courage to practice self-care becomes self-love, which upholds your part in the collective consciousness of humanity. As the saying goes, “you must first love yourself before you can truly love another.” Sarah Benson, who is known to many as the divine mother of Sound healing says, “the true sound of healing is LOVE.” As a therapist I have witnessed the healing of layers of pain in the body through receiving a loving massage. Self-care practices like movement, sound healing and breathwork are among the best ways to experience emotional and spiritual nourishment to salve the traumas of life. Healing is the journey of a lifetime, an ongoing practice for the individual. May you experience the true sound of healing today.
